From family man to inconvenience
The role Gregor plays in his family and the emotional toll it has on him and his family is more drastic than his physical change. Though his appearance is shocking, the weight of finding a new way to pay off the family debt is a realization his family has to process. Gregor can't leave the house and make the money he used to. In his mind, I feel he is in denial about this fact. He did not solely focus on his appearance. Still, he was more concerned about how he would provide for his family, which is a selfless act. Still, he did not accept that the change would lead to more emotional and internal struggles that couldn't go without acknowledgment, " Whenever the family came to speak of the necessity of someone earning money, Gregor would let go of the door and throw himself down upon the cool leather sofa beside it" (Metamorphasis, 204). His family didn't know how to deal with him and resorted to locking him in his room. The only person who really cared to visit him and make sure he had food was his sister, " During the first fortnight, Gregor's parents could not bring themselves to enter his room, and often he heard them expressing their heartfelt appreciation of his sister's labors" (Metamorphasis, 205). He doesn't fit in his family anymore because his role has changed. Before he changed into a bug, I wonder if he felt like his parents viewed him as their son and not just as the primary provider of their family because now that he can't support his family anymore, what is his purpose in their family? The concern of solving what is actually wrong with him is made less urgent than figuring out their new means of income.
