Careerism- Another level of the banking system of education
Yes, I agree to a degree and by which it is being experienced currently. Freire’s theory essentially explains that careerism asserts that “only careers in fields such as computer programming, finance and consulting…can secure us worthwhile futures”(Glassman 1). This is damaging because this pervasive culture labels someone as valuable only if they are able to be successful in these fields and is destructive for those who would be better suited for other fields but succumb to the societal pressure to persue an ill fitting career. Them succumbing to the pressure of pursuing a career that they have no affinity towards simply because they are desperately concerned with others viewing them as “successful” is absolutely their own fault, however it is nevertheless destructive because it pressures people to pursue careers that they do not enjoy and are not good at.
Careerism in college cannot align with problem posing education because they are fundamentally on opposing ends of thinking. Careerism aligns much more with the banking concept of education as in both cases those involved are expected to “recieve, memorize and repeat”(Freire 87). Furthermore, they are discouraged to think outside of the box and fullfill a life outside of the norm. Problem posing education would not encourage events such as “315,126 undergraduates apply(ing) for…2,700 available undergraduate inter positions at Goldman Sachs”(Glassman 2). In this instance it is obvious that there is an extremely large percentage of people who not only are not going to get the position but likely would be better at different roles. This would require them to implement a non bnking way of thinking where they think critically in reliton to themselves and potential career paths.
